Crochet & Amigurumi FAQs
Reading Our Patterns
Do your patterns use US or UK crochet terms?
Every pattern on Amigurumi Wren uses US crochet terms, and each one lists its abbreviations. If you learned with UK terms, remember that a US single crochet (sc) is a UK double crochet (dc), a US half double crochet (hdc) is a UK half treble (htr) and a US double crochet (dc) is a UK treble (tr).
What does the number in brackets at the end of a round mean?
It is the stitch count: how many stitches you should have when you finish that round. Counting at the end of each round is the easiest way to catch a missed or extra stitch early. If your count does not match, frog back to the start of the round and work it again, using a stitch marker in the first stitch.
Why are amigurumi worked in a spiral?
Most amigurumi are worked in continuous rounds without joining, which hides the seam and keeps the fabric smooth. Because there is no visible join, place a stitch marker in the first stitch of each round and move it up as you go, so you always know where a round begins.
Yarn, Hooks & Materials
What hook size should I use for amigurumi?
Amigurumi are worked tightly so the stuffing does not show, so most makers use a hook about 0.5 to 1 mm smaller than the yarn label suggests. With worsted weight (medium, 4) cotton, a 3.5 mm (US E-4) hook is a common choice. If you can see stuffing between your stitches, go down a hook size.
Can I use a different yarn than the pattern lists?
Yes. Choose a yarn of the same weight category so the size and look stay close to the pattern. A thicker yarn and bigger hook make a bigger piece, and a thinner one makes it smaller. Cotton gives crisp stitch definition, while acrylic is softer and often cheaper.
Safety & Using Our Patterns
Are safety eyes safe for babies?
Safety eyes, buttons and beads are small parts and are not safe for children under 3. For babies and toddlers, embroider the eyes with yarn or black embroidery thread instead, sew every piece on securely and check finished toys regularly for loose parts.
Can I sell items I make from your patterns?
Yes, you are welcome to make and sell finished items from our free patterns, and a mention of Amigurumi Wren is always appreciated. Please do not copy, translate, sell or republish the written pattern or our photos; share a link to the pattern page instead.
About Amigurumi Wren
How are the patterns on Amigurumi Wren made?
Patterns are drafted with the help of AI-assisted tools and follow the Craft Yarn Council standards for terms, yarn weights and hook sizes. Before a pattern is published, every round is checked: the stitches each round uses and makes must add up to the count in brackets. The photos are styled images of each finished piece. If anything is unclear or wrong, write to us with the round number and we will fix it.
