Read the material and size specifications
This Beginner pattern measures approximately 42 by 51 inches. It calls for nine 300 g/32 yd balls of Bernat Blanket Big in Navy or French Vanilla, totaling 288 yd/261 m, with a 25 mm hook and jumbo yarn needle.
Understand the construction
The moss-stitch fabric alternates single crochet and chain spaces. Gauge is 3.5 stitches and two rows per 4 inches, counting both single crochets and chains. After the setup, one row is repeated to the specified length; there is no separate decorative border in the PDF.
Use the full-size hook in the sample
A small swatch made with a smaller hook does not predict this fabric. Work enough repeats to measure a central section, then let the jumbo chenille relax before measuring.
Support the blanket as it grows
Rest most of the fabric on a table or your lap so its weight does not pull on the active row. Keep the working yarn loose enough to feed without dragging the entire ball.
Count spaces as well as stitches
The gauge statement includes chain stitches. Record both the visible single crochets and intervening spaces instead of treating each raised bump as the only unit. Check the last space at every turn.
How to read the illustration
The navy illustration uses a smaller-looking stitch scale and a visible edging band, whereas the PDF specifies jumbo chenille moss stitch without a separate border. Its generic edge-work close-up is not the moss-stitch repeat or a gauge sample. Use the official PDF for the complete construction and stitch sequence.
